GERHARD RICHTER is most notorious for his ability to paint different subjects in widely different styles from one year or painting to the next. That Richter's subjects and styles vary so widely—portraiture, landscape, urbanscape, color field, still life, abstraction, photorealism, and conceptualism—indicates his love of and faith in the medium. For Data Mining, Richter's expansive approach to painting extends to the design of industrial floor coverings. In other words, wall-to-wall carpeting. In 1991, Richter configured a grid of colored squares from which Vorwerk Teppiche GmbH fabaricated a line of carpeting that was sold by the square meter.

The line has since sold out and is no longer produced, but Data Mining was able to get its hands on a modest fragment.

All works are oil on canvas
